Judging by the shape and general appearance, probably by Spode, in imitation of Wedgwood designs of the period. The ice blue is quite distinctive and I would be interested in hearing of other examples of this colour. Note: The attribution is based on a jasper teapot in my collection with similar handle and parapet. The usual minor fritting around the lid. Very slight loss/wear to decoration. |

WEDGWOOD: Wine and Water Ewers, in Black Basalt. Designed by John Flaxman Senior in 1775, probably in imitation of a renaissance model. The water ewer is modelled with a triton gripping the tail of a dolphin; the wine ewer with a satyr gripping the horns of a goat; they are further decorated with swags of seaweed, and grapes, respectively. Restoration to crack in the body of the water ewer; both ewers have been remounted on their bases with modern nuts and bolts. We have another pair of these from about 1790 in good condition.
